As an effort to promote the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign, the country may indigenously manufacture shipping containers instead of importing them, it is learnt.

Demand for containers is growing by over 12 per cent and box traffic at the 12 Major Ports grew by 6.8 per cent in 2014-15 over the previous year.

It is reported that the Centre would soon appoint a consultant to conduct a study on the capacity available within the country to take up container manufacturing. There is also a plan to approach foreign companies if technological expertise was required in building specialised containers.

Shipping lines order 20’ containers from China, South Korea and various European countries. Many also buy second-hand boxes from the market.
