Kamarajar Port to create additional car parking space for INR 15 cr.

Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL) has plans to spend Rs 15 crore to create additional car parking space in the Port, which is expected to be ready by October, Mr R. Senthil Kumar, General Manager, said.

Currently, KPL, which exports the highest number of cars from the country, can provide parking space for around 15,000 units at a time but additional space is needed, especially in the last week of the month when manufacturers try to export more units, Mr Kumar said in a meeting organised by Kamarajar Port in association with the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.

During 2014-15, the Port handled 2.15 lakh automobiles, manufactured mainly by Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Honda, Daimler and Ashok Leyland, which was the highest among all Major Ports.

The Zonal Railways provides rakes to the ports of Chennai, Kamarajar, New Mangalore, VO Chidambaranar and Karaikal in Puducherry, Chief Operations Manager of Southern Railways, Mr S. Anantharaman, said.

According to him, of the total 6,888 rakes provided to the ports last year, Kamarajar Port alone got 2,106.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JN Port) has been ranked among the Top 5 container ports in the Middle East/South Asia in 2014 by the leading publication Containerisation International.
