Imports of bitumen, a major ingredient in road construction, rose by 93 per cent in 2014-15 as road building improved. Thirteen km of roads were built every day on average as compared to 3 km in the last days of the previous government, sources said.

Although the government was making efforts to switch to concrete and other new materials for road construction, bitumen is still preferred for the construction of highways.

According to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, imports of bitumen went up to about 4.5 lakh tonnes in 2014-15, from nearly 2.3 lakh tonnes in the previous fiscal.
